GED Math Test 2014 - Finding the Mean of a Data Set Tutorial

A math tutorial on finding the mean aka average of a given set of numbers. To find the mean of a set of numbers, you add up all the numbers and then divide that total by the number of numbers you added up.

For this problem, our numbers were 6, 34, 13, 11, 15, 7, and 7. The mean or average is (6 + 34 + 13 + 11 + 15 + 7 + 7)/7 = 93/7 = 13.29. We divided the summation by 7 because there were 7 numbers in the data set.

A math tutorial on how to solve a scientific notation problem on the 2014 GED math test. Scientific notation means you have one digit to the left of the decimal. The digit has to be between 1 and 9 so that means you can’t have a zero to the left of the decimal. For example, 0.156 * 10^5 is not the right way to do scientific notation because there is a zero to the left of the decimal. 1.56 * 10^4 is the right way. It would also be wrong to write 15.6 * 10^3 because now there are two digits to the left of the decimal.

Note that when you move the decimal to the right one place the power of the exponent drops by one. When the decimal moves one place to the left, the power of the exponent increases by one. Basically, when you move the decimal to the left you are dividing by ten so to keep the number the same the exponent term has to multiplied by ten. Likewise, when you move the decimal to the right you are multiplying by ten so the exponent term has to be divided by ten. For example 2 * 10^2 = 20 * 10^1 = 200 * 10^0

A math tutorial on how to find the surface area of the sphere if you’re given the volume.

The formula for the volume of a sphere (aka a ball) is V = 4 / 3 * pi * r^3 where r is the radius. If you know the volume you can solve for r and then plug it into the formula for the surface area of a sphere. SA = 4 * pi * r^2.

GED Math Test 2014 – Solve by Substitution Tutorial

GED Math Test 2014 - Solve by Substitution Tutorial

You can get our 75 question GED exam with videos of all the solutions:
http://www.gedmathanswers.com

A math tutorial on how to solve for variables using the substitution method.

We’ve got two equations:
y = 8 + 4 * x
2 * y – 20 * x = 4

We’ve already got the first equation in the form y equals so we can plug the first equation into the y value of the second one.

2 * (8 + 4 * x) – 20 * x = 4

16 + 8 * x – 20 * x = 4
16 – 12 * x = 4
-12 * x = -12
x = 1

Now we can use x = 1 to solve for y by plugging x = 1 into either the first or second equation.

y = 8 + 4 * x
y = 8 + 4 * 1
y = 12

Solving by substitution has given us the values x = 1 and y = 12. Since the equations given were both equations of a line the point (1, 12) would be where the lines intersect.
