Will Smith shot, killed: Former New Orleans Saints DE gunned down in road rage incident – TomoNews

NEW ORLEANS — Former Saints defensive end Will Smith was shot and killed in New Orleans on Saturday night, following a minor car crash, authorities said.

Orleans Parish Coroner Dr. Jeffrey Rouse confirmed Smith was the fatal victim in the shooting. Authorities said Smith’s wife was wounded and taken to the hospital. The shooter is being questioned, police said.

The shooting occurred around 11:29 p.m. close to the intersection of Sophie Wright Place and Felicity Street in the Lower Garden District, NOPD said.

Smith and his wife were in his Mercedes G63 SUV following some friends in a Chevrolet Impala when their vehicle was rear-ended by a Hummer H2. The collision caused Smith’s Benz to run into the Impala.

Smith and the driver of the Hummer “exchanged words, at which time the driver of the Hummer produced a handgun and shot the male victim (Smith) multiple times and his 34-year-old wife twice in the right leg,” said NOPD spokeswoman Juan Barnes.

Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. Racquel Smith was taken to the hospital and treated for non-life threatening wounds. The gun used in the shooting has been recovered.

Police said the driver of the Hummer, Cardell Hayes, 28, was arrested on charges of second-degree murder.

Hayes did not enter a plea during his first court appearance on Sunday, and bond was set at million. Being convicted of second-degree murder carries an automatic life sentence.

UNARMED Former NFL Star Joe McKnight, SHOT DEAD By WHITE MAN In New Orleans Road Rage ATTACK!

UNARMED Former NFL Star Joe McKnight, SHOT DEAD By WHITE MAN In New Orleans Road Rage ATTACK!

Ex-NFL star Joe McKnight was allegedly shot dead by a 54-year-old white man following a road rage incident in New Orleans.

McKnight, who played for the New York Jets and the Kansas City Chiefs, was shot dead on Thursday afternoon in Terrytown after an argument at an intersection.

Medical emergency staff gave the 28-year-old CPR as he lied on the street but he was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering multiple gun shot wounds, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office told Dailymail.com.

Ronald Gasser, a 54-year-old white male, was taken into custody after the shooting. He is currently being questioned by homicide detectives but has not yet been formally arrested. Police said Gasser never left the scene of the shooting and turned his gun into authorities.

Gasser was pictured sitting by his car as medical staff attempted to revive McKnight.

A witness at the scene told Nola.com that she saw a man yelling at another man, believed to be McKnight, at an intersection who was trying to apologize.

She said the man yelling fired his gun multiple times and stood over him saying: ‘I told you don’t you f*** with me.’

Multiple other witnesses say they saw the driver of the Infiniti sedan pull McKnight from his Audi before allegedly shooting him, Fox 8 reports.

McKnight was not armed at the time, according to police. McKnight played football for John Curtis High School and the University of Southern California. The running back was drafted by the New York Jets in 2010 and the Kansas City Chiefs in 2014.

His stepfather, Elmo Lee, said McKnight was about to be signed by the Minnesota Vikings. ‘I just want people to know that this was not a troubled kid. The boy was just trying to make it back in the NFL, that’s all he wanted to do,’ he said.

‘That was his whole dream since six years old. I’ve been knowing him from six, and this is just senseless, and it has to stop. Somewhere it has to stop.’ McKnight had just finished a season playing for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the Canadian Football League.

The head coach Chris Jones released a statement saying: ‘We are shocked to hear the news of Joe’s sudden passing. We send our deepest sympathies to Joe’s family, friends, and all those impacted by this tragedy.’

Fans and former teammates posted tributes on social media following news of his shock death.

The New York Jets tweeted: ‘Rest in peace, Joe McKnight. Our thoughts and condolences are with his loved ones’.

NFL veteran Antonio Cromartie said: ‘Just got a message saying my former teammate Joe McKnight was killed today. This hurt to the heart. I can’t stop crying. #RestInPeace.’

Journalist Eric Allen tweeted: ‘Back in 2011, we asked #JoeMcKnight who his best friend on the #Jets was and he said, “Everybody’s my best friend.” That was Joe.’ McKnight’s death comes just months after retired New Orleans Saints star Will Smith was also shot dead in New Orleans.

The 34-year-old was fatally shot in the back and side after exchanging words with the driver of a Hummer H2 that rear-ended his Mercedes G63 SUV in April.

Smith’s wife was shot twice in the right leg.

Cardell ‘Bear’ Hayes – a 28-year-old former security guard for the Saints – was arrested and charged with second-degree murder over Smith’s death.

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu said this week that gun violence in the city was ‘out of control’ after a mass shooting left nine injured and one dead on the famous Bourbon Street on Sunday morning.

Ten people aged between 20 and 37 – eight men and two women – were shot after gunfire broke out. One male victim died.

Mayor Mitch Landrieu described the shocking scene as ‘totally unacceptable.’

‘The violence continues to spin out of control with people brandishing weapons whenever they think they can,’ he told WDSU.

‘It’s really unfortunate.’

Two people were arrested on gun charges after the deadly fracas – one of whom was also injured in the gunplay.

Will Smith shooting: Ex-New Orleans star may have been in hit-and-run with murder suspect – TomoNews

NEW ORLEANS — New surveillance footage suggests former New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith may have been involved in a hit-and-run accident before he was fatally shot.

Suspect Cardell Hayes was charged with second degree murder after Smith died of multiple gunshots in New Orleans on Saturday night. Smith’s wife Racquel is recovering in the hospital after she was shot twice in the leg.

However, it remains unclear how many weapons were at the scene of the shooting or if Hayes was the victim of a hit-and-run prior to crashing into the back of Smith’s car.

A car matching the description of Smith’s Mercedes G-63 SUV can be seen rear-ending an orange Hummer matching the description of Hayes’ vehicle minutes before the shooting, footage obtained by Fox affiliate WVUE shows.

Earlier on Saturday, Smith posted a selfie to Instagram at 7:44 p.m. stating that he and his wife were “having a blast” at the French Quarter Fest in New Orleans, CNN reported.

The Smiths dined with friends at Sake Cafe on Magazine Street from around 9:30 p.m. before leaving the sushi restaurant at 11:15 p.m.

The unverified surveillance footage appears to show Smith’s Mercedes SUV bumping into the Hummer from behind at 11:22 p.m. The footage shows that a vehicle matching the description of Smith’s didn’t stop and was pursued by the Hummer.

At some point before 11:29 p.m, an orange Hummer driven by Hayes rear-ended Smith’s vehicle. Smith’s SUV then crashed into a Gray Impala driven by a friend.

According to police, Hayes and Smith “exchanged words” after the crash, before Hayes shot Smith dead, CNN reported.

Acting attorney for Hayes John Fuller said his client was chasing a vehicle that hit him and sped off before he crashed into Smith, the New Orleans Advocate reported.

By 11:35 p.m, Hayes was arrested at the scene of the shooting, near the intersection of Felicity Street and Sophie Wright Place in the city’s Lower Garden district, CNN reported.

Police recovered one gun at the scene, according to CNN.

Fuller said he was investigating a video in which a possible witness claimed there could have been a second gun at the scene, according to the Times-Picayune.
